Formal Introduction
Dear Professor Blackstone,
I am Choo Han Rong Amos, currently pursuing a degree in telematics at Singapore Institute of Technology (SIT). It was a pleasure meeting you briefly during the technical communication class on Wednesday. It was an interesting experience for me as I have never encountered a professor or a teacher who engages students with such vigor before.
I would also like to share my personal interests, and that would be going for a jog 5-6 times a week as I feel that by training physically, I would be able to improve my thinking skills as I would have a clearer head to start the day.
Through my current course, I look forward to enhancing my skills and knowledge in the automotive industry. I graduated from Nanyang Polytechnic (NYP) with a diploma in engineering informatics. During my polytechnic days, we were used to programming and designing certain type of websites, which laid the foundation for my programming skills. When I first looked into the courses that universities were offering, telematics was the course which caught my eye as the third choice partly because of the fact that it was a rather new course, and also due to the similarity in module topics between engineering informatics and telematics.
Having worked as a part-timer in the food and beverage industry, I find it necessary and absolutely relevant to have a strong foundation in communication skills. It is a job which requires an individual to be able to pacify the customer in case of a mistake, as well as communicate with the manager well by describing the needs of the customer, should an individual encounter a nasty customer and will need an intervention from a higher management. My strength in communication is being able to hold a conversation well with a person if I have talked to him or her at least once.
My weakness in communication is the fact that I like to overthink certain issues with regards to how I start a conversation. I often have trouble befriending someone first, as I tend to think about how they would react to my words. I get really flustered whenever the situation turns awkward due to the lack of topics to talk about. I plan to overcome my weakness by practicing having conversations with anyone I meet, with the hopes of getting better at starting up a conversation the next time round.
I wish that by the end of the current trimester, I will be able to turn my weakness into my strength. My goals for this module is to produce a good report and step out of my comfort zone by starting up a conversation with others.
Best Regards,
Amos
